Microsoft Kin Two: Stylish and Intuitive

Posted by Isha Farhad On April - 13 - 2010

Microsoft Kin 2The Kin Two outshines its sibling, the Kin One with the stronger specs and a better design. But is it perfect? No, omissions and limitations within the software keep it from being a threat to lower-priced smartphones on Verizon.

The design of the Kin Two is much more attractive than its squat sibling. It has a  roomier keyboard as well as a larger display. When my friend John Beg, took it for tests, he found the keys comfortable to press and nicely spaced.

He was impressed with the Kin Two’s 8-megapixel camera and he took a few snapshots at the launch event, which took place in a dimly lit nightclub. He was also impressed with how powerful the flash was. Faces were nicely highlighted without being completely blown out.

The details appeared sharp and colors looked fairly natural in his test shots. The Kin Two also captures HD video, which he unfortunately did not get a chance to test out. More info we will disclose further.

Bloomberg: Palm is up for grab

Posted by siddharth On April - 12 - 2010

Bloomberg has just informed that Palm is putting itself up for grab  and the offers will come in this week. This is really a pretty good news, considering by CEO, Jon Rubinstein who was adamant just a few days ago that Palm had a plan to get profitable palmeven when his organization’s stock price went on a buyout-rumor fueled rollercoaster. Bloomberg says that Palm is already retained Qatalyst and Goldman Sachs Partners to find a buyer, with HTC and Lenovo both expressing interest and Dell’s apparently already taken a pass. But on the record, none of these parties are saying anything but if this is true, things are about to get fast and wild.

Givori’s new Calypso collection inspired by Greek mythology

Posted by Isha Farhad On April - 8 - 2010

givori-calypsoGivori, specializing in mobile art, has already shown us some ugly creations such as the Serendipity and some good ones like the Via Veneto range. Now, the company has launched the premier model within its new Fine Jewellery collection, Calypso. This new collection has been designed to highlight the classic elegance and intrigue evoked by the Greek nymph of the sea. The Calypso collection is handcrafted in England and is available on 18 karat gold-plated Nokia 8800 handsets and comes festooned with natural mother of pearl intricately cut, shaped and arranged in an eye-catching fish-scale design joined with gold pin embellishments.

Givori Brand Manager, Nader Mikhail said  that for the new Givori Fine Jewellery line, they drew inspiration from Greek mythology to create a range that reflects exquisite natural materials, timeless glamour and the romance of folklore. And through their unique collaboration with leading craftsmen in England, each mother of pearl element is individually hand fitted and delicately grouped together to form one seamless surface  reflecting heavenly hues.

The new collection is available in Classic edition and an Exclusive edition, priced at AED 15,000 (about $4,100) and AED 8,899 (about $2,420) respectively. The exclusive edition boasts a round brilliant cut 0.22 carat diamond solitaire navigation key, a personalized name engraving option and a flawless baroque shape pearl pendant.

Gateway ZX4800-06 Powerful Budget All-in-One

Posted by Yogesh On April - 5 - 2010

Gateway ZX4800-06The Gateway ZX4800-06 is the more powerful budget all-in-ones I have looked at. It is an attractive system, some elements of the user experience are less polished than they could be.

Gateway instead built the ZX4800-06 around a 2.2GHz Pentium Dual Core processor. As the processor is dated, it did help the ZX4800-06 earn a WorldBench 6 score of 84. By comparison, the Athlon X2-powered MSI Wind Top AE2010 produced a mark of 60.

The ZX4800-06 features:

A 20-inch
16:9 widescreen display

The ZX4800-06 is no gaming powerhouse. It achieved rates no higher than 8 frames per second in our gaming tests with its integrated Intel GMA X4500HD graphics chip. That kind of frame rate is low, but it is not out of the ordinary for such PCs, which are designed for home users who just need to get online, do some light word processing, watch videos or browse photos.

Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) runs smoothly on the ZX4800’s 4GB of RAM and has ample room to roam thanks to the spacious, 750GB hard drive. Most of the other budget all-in-ones I have looked at have hard-drive sizes around 320GB, therefore, I was pleased to see this much storage included with the ZX4800-06.

Apple iPad reveals on PCWorld Podcast 72

Apple iPad

Finally, the Apple iPad has hit the streets, after too much waiting, rumors and speculation. PCWorld’s editors have spent the day exploring it from every angle, including smashing one to see how good it takes a beating. Listen in as we take off the gloves, cut through the hype and talk seriously about Apple’s new creation.

idisplaytopIf you are a Mac user and if you want an extra monitor that can turn your iPhones and iPads into external multitouch displays. Then what to do is download the iDisplay app, an extension for OS X, and let the data flow over either Wi-Fi or 3G.

Now, just turn your iPad/iPhone into a convenient side monitor for your Mac desktop. This is right that the connection goes both directions, so you can use your multitouch gadget as an input device. The iDisplay app is $4.99 and available in iTunes whereas the corresponding OS X extension is available through the iDisplay website.

Wow! great news, is not?

Upgrade Your Laptop’s Hard Drive to SSD

Posted by Yogesh On April - 2 - 2010

rv-laptop-ssd-2If you want to speed up your laptop and lengthen its battery life then swap the hard disk drive out for a speedy solid-state drive.

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are all the rage. Since, SSDs have no moving parts, they are more shock-resistant and rugged than standard hard drives and that makes them perfect for laptops that get bumped around a bit.

Though their write performance varies, they offer great read performance, also, random small writes  can be very fast, but long writes of large block data can be slower than on traditional hard drives ((as you might have with continuous video recording).

But, upgrading to a solid-state drive is not as easy as purchasing a drive and throwing it in your PC. Here are a few tips for picking out the right model, making sure that it will work with your setup, carefully cloning your old drive, and keeping the install process clean and painless. (Don’t forget to read “How to Switch to a Solid-State Drive” for more advice.)

Solid-state drives come in two major types: MLC (multi-level cell) and SLC (single-level cell). An  MLC drive stores two or more bits per cell and an SLC SSD stores data as one bit per flash memory cell. As a result, MLCs are less expensive than SLCs at the same capacity point, since you require fewer physical flash memory components for greater capacity. The downside is that MLC drives are slower than SLC units, though usually still much faster than regular hard drives.

You’ll typically find SLC drives in workstation-class environments and data centers, where the greater cost is mitigated by gains in reliability and productivity.

According to reporters earlier, Meego release for N900 is getting ready.  Nokia’s MeeGo team has recently launched that the very first cut of the melded Moblin / Maemo mobile platform is now available for download. Specifically, users of Atom n900 meegonotebooks, Atom-powered Moorestown MIDs and N900s have all been gifted with their own distributions which will boot off a USB stick or directly on the devices themselves.

It is sad that the MeeGo user experience is not included here, so if you flash your N900 you are going to end up booting into a terminal console, but some of you sickos are into that sort of thing, are not you? Next up for the team is a release billed 1.0 that will come in the month of May and we are told details on the road to that version will be revealed over the coming days.

So, take care of yourselves if you go for it.

SimmtronicsSimmbookFor a few months now, Simmtronics’ Simmbook netbook has been floating around but it’s only gotten a considerable boost thanks to a partnership with Canonical and IBM, who have teamed up with the company in an effort to bring the laptop to growing and competitive markets. Right now, it is available in only South Africa, Thailand India  and Vietnam. But, the Simmtronics has plans to bring the Simmbook to the developed countries like US, UK and France in few months.

Their confluence means the netbook will run on Ubuntu Netbook Remix and come pre-loaded with IBM’s Client for Smart Work and that includes Lotus Symphony and access to many cloud-based services. As for the netbook itself, it is about as basic as you might expect, including the usual Atom N270 processor, 10-inch display, three-cell battery, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive along with a few upgrades available.

Then again, it is available off-the-shelf for only $200 and IBM and Simmtronics are apparently working with many clients to offer the netbook at “a competitive price” to other countries around the world.
