So, finally the Acer Liquid A1, the first Android handset to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor just started shipping in the UK and my friend has got a video unboxing. Turns out the box housing the 1GHz Snapdragon-powered Android set is very interesting in itself. With a magnetic hinged design that opens to reveal the manuals, charger and bundled 2GB SanDisk microSD card and SD adapter.

Do not hold out for an Android 2.0 for the phone. With Acer’s custom Spinlets UI skin on top, it is running Android 1.6 which equals a frowny-face from us. I hope Acer manages to update the things if this guy comes to the States.

You may get a 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, triband (900/1900/2100) HSDPA and quadband GPRS/ GSM/EDGE along with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi b/g and a 5-megapixel camera.  The processor is capable of 1GHz speeds and the Acer has taken the decision to underclock it to 768MHz in response to the capabilities of the 1,350mAh battery.

The Acer Liquid A1 isn’t exactly the sveltest Android handset around at 12.5mm thick, and I am not convinced by the black and white color scheme, but early previews have been reasonably impressed by the performance of it.  Unlike Motorola and HTC, Acer has not done a huge amount of customization to the UI, therefore you will be living with a standard install of Android 1.6 Donut.

Currently, the Acer Liquid A1 is in stock at retailers Expansys and Clove priced at £328.99 ($538) and £339.99 ($556) respectively.
