For a few months now, Simmtronics’ Simmbook netbook has been floating around but it’s only gotten a considerable boost thanks to a partnership with Canonical and IBM, who have teamed up with the company in an effort to bring the laptop to growing and competitive markets. Right now, it is available in only South Africa, Thailand India and Vietnam. But, the Simmtronics has plans to bring the Simmbook to the developed countries like US, UK and France in few months.
Their confluence means the netbook will run on Ubuntu Netbook Remix and come pre-loaded with IBM’s Client for Smart Work and that includes Lotus Symphony and access to many cloud-based services. As for the netbook itself, it is about as basic as you might expect, including the usual Atom N270 processor, 10-inch display, three-cell battery, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive along with a few upgrades available.
Then again, it is available off-the-shelf for only $200 and IBM and Simmtronics are apparently working with many clients to offer the netbook at “a competitive price” to other countries around the world.
